150$ Headset recommendations

Go to solution Solved by BottleneckHunter,

They are pretty much Rebranded Brainwavz MH5 and they are very good for the price. I will agree with sobe and say that the MX0x line is a terrible option for gaming. They have absolutely no soundstage, which is what you need for positional audio with gaming. Closed headphones in general lack soundstage, but the NVX does have decent soundstage for closed headphones. If you could stand to have sound leakage of open headphones I still would suggest a pair of Philips SHP9500 + a Vmoda BoomPro.

The NVX XPT100 is a clone of the renowned Brainwavz HM5, you really can't go wrong with them as far as closed cans go, especially for the price.

Looks like i will be getting the NVX XPT100's and the Vmoda BoomPro i think this should work well

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x's seem pretty good for a closed back solution plus modmic for under 150$ will i be able to apply some sort of surround sound using my XFI sound card?

You do not need any extra sound equipment. Unless  your going into Hi-Fi territory aka $600+ headphones.

Cant comment on Audio-Technica headphones because I havent used them but, they are hyped to all hell on these boards so take that for what its worth. And yes, you'll be able to use software to simulate surround sound. Creative has software to do this as does Razer. I prefer stereo but if you want to try surround sound then try both Creative and Razer software and use what you like the best. And last, http://www.amazon.com/Headset-Buddy-Detachable-Microphone-Headphone/dp/B00DLKX7BK save some money and get this. Works just as well as the modmic (i have the MoovMic and ModMic ver1) and will save you money for better headphones

PC Audio Setup = Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 80 ohm and Sennheiser pc37x (also for xbox) hooked up to Schiit Fulla 3

NVX XPT100 is a great closed solution, I would not and do not recommend the AT M series for use with games due to it's soundstage.

OK so i like the Big Earcups of the NVX XPT100's and they look bulkier which i actually like better than flimsy headphones and the AT M40X's look great too but i cant decide, the M40's look a little flimsy/small and i really want over the ear for noise isolation i think ill still go with the modmic due to better build quality bit i have never heard of NVX are they a reputable brand compared to Audio Technica?

Whoa buddy, hold your horses. The BoomPro will not work with the NVX since they are dual plug instead of single 3.5mm input for the cups.

Edit: If you really like the BoomPro apparently these have pretty good soundstage for closed headphones, and are decent for gaming. They are a little more pricey though, but are available for a little over $130 used.

ATH-AD700X + Modmic. The ATH-AD series is one of the best headphones at the moment, open, clean, accurate and neutral sound that does not cost a fortunate. I could hear people from the other side of the map in CSGO and pinpoint their position very accurately.

(A few of the videos are 500X/900X but the quality between the 500X to 900X is minimal since this series of headphones have a distinctive clean, clear and airy sound signature. Though from 900X to 2000X there is a difference.)

I use this headphone mainly for analytical listening (Jazz and classical music) but it is so good in gaming too, its older brother the ATH-AD700 (non-X) is legendary in the First-Person Shooter space.

@BottleneckHunter

You should watch this video for some ideas (and my post above)

He even said not to buy headsets, especially 7.1 ones, avoid those like a plague.

The ATH-M series have very narrow soundstage, not very good for gaming.

It is also bad to use software or hardware for virtual surround. It is better to use the game's original mix which is already designed to emulate a virtual surround for stereo in the first place.
