General question

Go to solution Solved by pwn_intended,

Hello! I am just about to start my first PC build. Everything has come except the bulk storage, is it okay for me to assemble it anyway, just leaving out the storage, and put that in when it comes? Also, is it okay for me to plug in my LED fans to the PSU and test them? If so how would I do it?

Thank you very much, Sincerely Arthorian

Welcome to the fun sport of pc building!

You can surely build everything that you currently have and add other components as you receive them. As long as you have a mobo, cpu, ram, psu and boot drive, you can build away. I would definitely build it now if the only thing you are missing is an extra storage drive since that is literally the easiest thing to pop in once it arrives. To save yourself some time, make sure to run the cables necessary for it now, so that you dont have to fiddle with them after you have hooked everything else up.

If the led fans have a molex or sata connector you just plug them into the psu directly, if they have 3/4 pin fan headers, you will need to plug them into your mobo or a fan controller.

Yep, as long as you have a drive you want to install your OS on. Mass storage can be added and removed at any time.

You can test the fans on the PSU, but only if your PSU has fan power connectors (pretty unlikely), or you have a molex or SATA power adapter to fan power. You can always just put it together outside of the case with the minimum components needed and do a test boot to ensure it gets past POST.

When in doubt, re-format.

For the fans you can't unless you have them connected into the motherboard but if they are new they should work perfectly. For the storage if you are planning to game on your pc I would recommend a WD Blue 1 to 2 tb hdd. If its just for school and such a WD 1tb Green should be fine. I would suggest though getting an ssd to put your os on just in case the hdd fails so that you can still use your pc, also so that it boots up faster than with a hdd.

You need to build the PC on the motherboard box to test everything before you think about putting it inside the case so you can go ahead and test everything works first while waiting for your storage.

Happy building!

I don't have any means of storage for the PC.

Well, you can put it together and boot to the BIOS, but you'll obviously have to wait before you can install an OS and really do anything with the PC. Adding storage is mainly just plug and play, so it can be done once everything else has been put together.

Ahh, then that drive isnt your "mass storage" but is in fact your main boot drive. You can in theory still build everything and just pop the drive in once it arrives. You can also put linux on a USB key and boot off that if you wanna test all your components and are impatient.

When in doubt, re-format.

I'd just like to say thankyou to everyone on this forum. Everyone has been really helpful, and guided me through the process of my first pc build. Not every forum has such a great community :)

No problem! Be sure to make a build log and spam loads of pics so we can have a looky at your rig!
