Hello everyone, this is like my first time posting here had a look around to see if i was doing everything right. Hopefully i am. Id be so glad if you can help. Here is a link to the parts list for this computer.

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/r3w4xr

So it was my little cousins wish list to have a pc where he could game on and also do school work. With him only turning 15 his parents didnt want to spend too much so i told them about pcpartpicker and as we went through i said ill get the cpu cooler.

Checked with the site and all the rest of the parts and the Noctua nh-d14 was compatible. Which has always had great reviews especially from linus. However on christmas day i ran into an issue. This huge cooler actually blocked his pci lane (mini itx board) so for the time being he is stuck with the stock amd cooler. But my issue is now he has an awesome cpu cooler sittinv dormunt and he wont get much for selling it.

I was thinking that maybe i could ghetto rig it where i use a pci extender and move the card down a few slots on the NZXT 410 case. Or sould i just try sell it and buy another cpu cooler with the money. I think i would be lucky to get 1/4 of the money back.

is it possible to return the item?

if not then what you can do is get a PCI-E riser card and make the graphics card stand on it at the bottom of the case if it reaches there.

Could you rotate it perhaps, or is RAM or something else in the way?

Or, is a Linus-patented hack job an option?  Is there a small portion you could cut off to make it fit?

A cooler that large kind of defeats the purpose of a mini-ITX build.    I'd return or sell it, and spend $16 for a more appropriate cooler like these -

Well it only slots in one way. I understand this cooler is a monster for this tiny little cpu but i was thinking for in the long run whhen he eventually upgrades his pc, i know the first thing that will be upgraded is going to be the mother board and the cpu. Everything else seems very good. I tried to get a return but was told that because i opened the cooler i wont get a refund as there is nothing wrong with the cooler itself

Thanks for all the replys.

Matt the build is not confined to a mini itx form factor it just so happens his parents where told to pick that cpu and i agreed. They then just found a cheap motherboard with wifi on it. I do think eventually he will upgrade the motherboard and cpu and more than likely take my i7 3770k and my motherboard when i upgrade my own machine. (Sort of hand me down upgrades)

I get that, however a good £20 CPU will be fine for a long time, hell in my system i'm running  a 3670k @4.4ghz on a CM hyper 212 evo.

Honestly you just need to get a more suitable cooler for the mini-ITX. Live and learn buddy. I've made that mistake too by misjudging my case clearance. The suggestions given are solid options. :)

Great guys. Think i will just have to get the measuring tape out next time and try it all out before i rush into getting a huge cooler.

Glad of the help was upset my xmas gift was the only thing that didnt fit.

Most cases should tell you their clearance for cards and coolers. But its always best to just measure everything yourself. :)

you can't spin the cpu cooler around at all? or remove a fan?

and DON'T buy either of those 2 coolers above in Matts reply. neither one is suitable for a 95+watt cpu. maybe a 65watt.

Then what is the stock cooler suitable for?  It must at least function or it wouldn't be included in the box.  And if so, I have to imagine those ones would be better at least

the reply was actually over my concerns about the 2 suggested HS&F mentioned above. not familiar with the cooler purchased and don't know if it can be oriented in a way that would work.................. the stock heat sink and fan suck to say the least but right now is the best option from what I read so far./

Both of the coolers I linked will work perfectly fine for him, as Ryan_Vickers was trying to point out to you, but his comment went over your head.    Anyways, if the TX3 can keep a 8350 under control, and it can, then it will be more than adequate for a X4 860K.   And please feel free to link us to some stats showing those coolers can only support 65W CPUs.  Oh, wait, you can't link us to that info because you just pulled that number out of your ass...........

sorry, but i've been around the block a fewtimes. if you're going to cool a 125watt processor don't put one on it that's cheap and over rated.

It don't matter how many times you've been around the block, you were wrong.  End of story.   Now lets let this thread get back on topic.
