easy question about raid 1

Hi!

I'm helping my dad with uppgrading his PC. he has a ssd as a fast boot drive and 2 recycled hdd for mas storage (mainely photos). we alredy formated one of the old drives and he started tranfering old imeges to it. at that point we realized that only 1 of the hdd was enough.

so why not use the other drive for raid 1 and have safe storage.

 

I never set up a raid befor and have som simpel questions about it. do i need to format other hdd ? now I alredy have som data one of the drives is that i problem ?

can i simpply select the 2 hdd for raid 1 and have it run dispite that fact ? will the data thats alredy on  the hdd automatically copy to the other hdd becus it is in raid 1?
