Question about Litecoin Mining.

Go to solution Solved by dalekphalm,

I have an Nvidia GT 620 that I want to use for Litecoin mining, and I wanted to know if I could just put it in my main rig, which is in the spoiler below.

I also have an X1600XT. I don't want to use my main card to mine, but I am open to it. I just wanted to know if I could use the GT 620 to mine while the 7850 is in there as well being used to output an image.

You could mine with one, both, or all 3, but you'd for sure need a better PSU for all 3.

However, just to put this into perspective, the GT 620 (And any nVidia card really) is utter crap at mining. If you have to pay for electricity, then it would cost more to run the extra card then it'd generate:

GT620: Less than 40 kHash/s (A GT640 is 40 kHash/s and a GT520 is 20 kHash/S, so yours will be somewhere in between)

HD 7860: 350-385 kHash/s (That's over 10x as fast, and therefore 10x the litecoin income)

X1600XT: Is so old it probably would do just as bad as the GT620 (No card from this generation shows up in the hardware comparison charts)

If you're serious about mining Litecoin with a GPU, then you honestly should stick with the HD 7850 by itself. You can still mine while you use it, you just use a less intense setting. Then when you're done using the computer, you can bump the intensity back up overnight and let it go full power.

If you upgraded to something like a 7950 or 7970 (Either can be had for under $300, and are kickass high end gaming cards), your hash rate would jump to 650-800 kHash/s, and you could use both the new card + the 7850.

In my current setup, I run a Gigabyte HD 7950 Windforce (700 kHash/s) + a Gigabyte HD 7770 OC (135 kHash/s) edition together for a combined hash power of 835 kHash/s. I have the 7770 as my secondary card, but I'm outputting my monitors through it, so that the 7950 can run full power. I only switch the monitors back when I want to play games.

AMD Cards will get you WAYYYY More m/hash.

Its not even worth using Nvidia cards to mine.

You can mine and output an image. Just wouldn't recommend mining while playing video games.

Or get those little ASIC things or whatever.

Desktop: Intel i5-3570K (stock) | Asus Sabertooth Z77 | G.Skill RipJaw 16GB 1600MHz | Samsung 840 120GB | EVGA GTX 680 SC+ 2GB | Fractal Design R4 | Windows 8 Pro (soon to have dual boot Mac OS X)

Retina Macbook Pro : Intel i7-3840QM | 16GB 1600 MHz | 256GB SSD | Nvidia GT 650M 1GB | Mac OS X 10.8.5

You can't use an ASIC mining hardware to mine litecoins at the moment because those are made to mine bitcoins, which use SHA-256.
