i have had this pc for over a year not the one in my profile but its running an amd A8-5600k with stock cooler its been fine for the last year underclocked to 3.3ghz but now it overheats even at that im now forced to run it with hyper threading disabled and at 2.5ghz can anyone explain this? is the cpu dieng?

cleaned it after first forced shutdown as clean as i can get it

 

Just some points think about:

 

When you were cleaning it did you take the CPU cooler off of the CPU? You might want to clean off the old thermal paste with some rubbing alcohol and apply fresh paste.

no i just removed the stock fan from the top and cleaned it as much as possible. don't have any paste on hand right now and no money to buy more

Well if you have not removed the CPU cooler from the CPU in the past either, i am not sure that changing out the paste will help. You might want to try it as a last resort if nothing else works. But this is where i run out of ideas xD

ik linus mentioned at one point that he removed a heat sink and but it back on without applying new thermal paste and it worked fine i just dont want to chance it since a 4.59 USD thermal paste cost me 596.81 ISK

Did you accidentally loosen one of the clips on the stock cooler? That could lead to bad contact between heatsink and cpu
