Would a standalone AP help?

Theo

Hellooo,

So currently I have one device that handles everything, modem, router, switch, ap (wireless N), coffee machine and so on.

The one given to me by my isp (Telenet in belgium) and my plan gives me 200mbps down and 12mbps up. I can only use wireless, cables are out of question, dont recommend running ethernet.

However it has horrible prioritization, if someone starts utorrent, even if it downloads at 5kbps, everything else will lag, in general it happens with any P2P file sharing. Plus the access point aspect of it has pretty limited range and disconnects from time to time.

I was wondering would getting an AP fix prioritization issues and in general work better? The one i have in mind is the Ubiquiti AP AC PRO

Get a decent router and turn off the residential gateway functions of your ISP provided unit. Force that unit to run solely as a modem. Dedicated AP will not fix any issues that you are having at all.

Wait cause i can only slightly read dutch so if im answering to wrong questions, my bad.

Can't run cables to a pc since the modem is on the floor below and all pc's are above. Yeah if someone has a torrent client open, internet slows down for everyone, i can only easily test this with wifi but im guessing it would be the same if i ran a pc with ethernet. Speeds on rest of network are fine however when someone is watching an HD netflix stream which is why im guessing QOS is bad

Alright however the only access to a setup screen for the modem is via the ISP website which has pretty limited options. I've tried several things to get to a more detailed options page but no success ( if you have a suggestion i'll gladly try it)

Would it be better to just buy a better modem to replace the one from my isp?

I'm sorry I thought you could speak Dutch :)

You can't replace the Telenet modem.

I read somewhere that maybe the modem can't handle al the connections that utorrent makes. Can you try to limit it? (Maybe in torrent program settings)

You could do this: go to a Telenet store and bring your modem with you and ask for a modem-only (without wifi, router). Say that you need to use your own router.

Normally they would accept it. If you get the modem-only you need to buy a router. You could buy something like Asus ac68u that one is really good or you could buy a router from Ubiquiti and an AP

I'm pretty sure you can't but you can replace the Telenet modem+router with a Telenet modem-only

The one I mentioned Asus AC-68u is a router+ap+switch

EDIT: I just read your other thread. It's a good combination. Buy it from amazon.de if you can. You can support LMG if you use the link and most of the time it's the cheapest.

Also don't forget to replace the modem :)

More expensive? Normally not but if you can find it cheaper somewhere, buy it there :)

There's no benefit in a master resellers/distributie just buy it from a well-known site
