I have dig up a old AM3 computer from the grave, I have tested the computer and i the works quiet well, the PC is not that loud as well and also the power usage is quite low as well. I know AMD cpu is not quite great for FreeNAS I hear, would this effect much performance or is they another option like in Linus's video using UNraid. I am kinda new into NAS area so please correct me if my question is quiet vague.

Specs:

N68-S3 UCC Asrock

Some Phenom II CPU @3.3ghz (Will check bios again for actual cpu, I think it X4.)

2X2GB DDR3 Ram (ECC ram is not supported so...)

Ideal storage: around 2TB should more than enough.

Question 1: Should SATA II port be enough for hard drives right?

Question 2: Is the motherboard Ethernet port enough or should grab a cheap pci addon card.

Question 4: Will 4GB of ram be enough for 2x2GB WD Red?

Question 5: What the max  storage i can get from 8GB of ram for example?

Thanks

Your first question should be how much storage do you want this computer to hold? A measly 200GB, 500GB, 2TB, 10TB? We need to know this because we have to have an idea about how much hardware you will need to run the NAS.

I was hoping to run 2TB in raid 1

First off, RAID 1 is for redundancy, not backup.

Second, for 2TB it makes absolutely zero sense to run an old, power hungry computer. If your router has a USB port that supports external storage, buy an external USB hard drive and plug it in to the router or pick up something like a WD My Cloud device.

If anything, I would go with unRAID do to your lack of ECC. But like previously said, it would probably just be more practical to use the USB port on your router if it has one. Having a full-fledged computer running all the time for 2TB of space just doesn't seem worth it.

My router doesn't have usb port but i think running windows file sharing features on my main rig should be fine. It i7 6700k 16gb 980ti, think should run more than fine as my motherboard has dual ethernet might able to use asus software use one if the nick for the folder sharing.
