Hi,

I'm looking at setting up a pfsense box that will have be running a cache, dns server and real time scanning of downloads with AV as well as the basic routing. I have been looking at a dell poweredge 2950. I can pick one of these up from a mate for $30 so.... Thats why it is being considered. The specs are 2x Xeon 5160 @ 3GHz with 8GB DDR2 FB-DIMM @667MHz. I have HDDs that will fill it.

There is two problems with it though;

1. There is a warning in POST about the internal being missing or malfunctioning. I believe this could just be that the battery needs replacing, is this so and if so can I do it?

2. The 8GB RAM is made up of 2x 2GB sticks and 4x 4GB sticks, the BIOS says that this is no optimal (I realise this as well....) However he has had it running ubuntu server for years at high loads without issue, will this be a problem for pfSense. (I will be changing this out later but can't immediately)

My question is also, will this system be beefy enough to handle full GBe speeds on three ports as well as dealing with all my internet traffic being scanned?

And lastly if people have one of these how loud can I expect this box to be?
