Racing wheel?

Go to solution Solved by brownninja97,

I've got a couple of games that might benefit from a racing wheel already (Euro truck sim 2, crazy taxi) but was looking to get the new DiRT Rally and that really sparked my interest in a racing wheel.

My budget for it would be fairly modest, a gearbox isn't needed but I wouldn't want to sacrifice force feedback if possible. Also, my desk curves so that might cause mounting problems?

Also, what's you guys thoughts about DiRT Rally? General concensus sounds pretty positive.

in terms of prices

Lowest is the DFGT but take in mind that even the DFGT is a bloody awesome wheel, pedals arent great

The G27 is the next option, it has slightly more refined force feedback and it comes with a clutch and a h pattern gearbox

The T300 is the next option, its a massive leap from the G27 due to gears vs belts, you lose the clutch and h pattern i believe.

I dont think you will need to go any further then that, you might wish to check out the T150 or T500.

If someone recommends you a G29 then they have no idea what they are talking about

In all honesty, this forum isnt the best place to ask. I highly suggest you go to Racedepartment that they will be able to help you much more

What sort of budget are you looking at? Prior to a bout a week or 2 ago, the G27 was the goto piece of gear for people with a budget, but since the G29 has been released and the G27 has been discontinued the price has sky rocketed.

Even Fanatec seem to have discontinued their AIO "racing wheels" in favor of the base + wheel setup which is far superior but also far more expensive.

nearly forgot regarding Dirt rally im going to tell that its bloody hard, from the games you listed none are sims, now generally sims like assetto corsa or rfactor etc etc are hard, Dirt rally is even harder, learning to use a wheel takes a bit of time. that being said improvement comes with persistence but the game will give you a right belting before you can achieve much in it, you will also need to become knowledgeable in the art of creating a setup dependent on the area of the track and the various conditions.

yes fanatec are focusing on their clubsport base now because its selling quite well and they get a hefty profit margin from the base and the rims man, they get insane markups on them.

Tell me about it. I have the Forza AIO from them along with the Clubsport v2 pedals. I did want the base and a wheel at the time but the base was on invite only pre-order and then back-ordered for over a year and I got bored. The cost for a complete Fanatec setup these days is ridiculous.

If someone recommends you a G29 then they have no idea what they are talking about

I have a G27 wheel, which was bought a little over a year ago to use on PC, and to replace a busted Thrustmaster TX wheel. It is an awesome wheel. I also just recently purchased a Logitech G920 wheel based solely on my experience with the G27, and I wanted a wheel that was compatible with the Xbox one, as I am an avid Forza fan. It is practically the same as the G29, just without the shift lights and a could of missing buttons, everything else is the same though. It is still a very good wheel, and it feels better than the G27, feels a little tighter, a bit more solid, and has less rattles.

But!..... I would not recommend it for use on the PC just at the moment. The Logitech drivers for the G920/G29 wheel are pretty much useless at the moment, with barely any adjust ability to which the previous software/drivers afforded to the G27. You can not currently adjust the FFB overall strength, Springs, damping, or center force at all in the newer Logitech software. And this means it does not currently play nice with the likes of assetto Corsa (and others), where the wheel will currently oscillate like crazy. Some games to work ok with the G29/G920 wheel though, such as Pcars and Dirt rally. But I would highly suggest trying to find a G27 wheel at this time.

If you want a wheel for the PC/PS4, I would suggest the Thrustmaster T300RS or T500RS.

If you want a wheel for the X1/PC, then I would suggest the G920 wheel, even with the issues it currently has on the PC. Hopefully Logitech will sort out the driver issues.

If Thrustmaster have solved the quality issues on the Thrustmaster TX wheel, then I would highly suggest picking that wheel up. It is belt driven FFB using brushless motors. And even though I have not personally gone back to Thrustmaster for a wheel, it was miles ahead of the Logitech wheels in terms of FFB feel.

im pretty sure a few of the thrustmasters support the xbox, if that not possible the G920 is the only option, take in mind that the game could have the improved ffb and not the wheel.

For anyone on pc only though the G920/G29 is one of the worst investments you could make

I looked at the DFGT and it claims to be PS2/PS3 only according to Logitech's site, unless I'm looking at the wrong version?

I have a G27 that has served me well for several years. Honestly have no idea if logitech is still selling them though. Depending on how aggressive the curve is on your desk it may interfere with most wheels as they are designed to mount onto a square surface. Also DiRT Rally is realistic to the point that it will infuriate you at first. It will punish every little mistake you make, but it is damn rewarding when you get it right.

For anyone on pc only though the G920/G29 is one of the worst investments you could make

Please read my last message again, I clearly state I used to own a Thrustmaster TX wheel, till it broke anyway. Which is xbox one compatible.

The FFB in Forza isn't great, and the better feeling of the G920 compared to the G27, is a comparison made using the PC games that both wheels work in. The G920 was bought predominantly to use on the Xbox one, since that is the system I wanted an additional wheel for. I have tried both the G27 and G920 back to back in the same games on the PC. The G920 feels better, has less slack at the wheels center, has better overall feel. The G29 is the exact same wheel mechanically, so it should feel the same as the G920. There is an improvement there over the G27, even though it is using the same mechanical. Logitech have obviously either changed the motors out, or made it so everything fits a little tighter. Plus it has a better sensor over the G27. Not to mention that the pedals for the G920/G29 comes with one of the most popular brake pedal mods around for the G25/G27, which improves the feel immensely while braking.

To say the G29/G920 is one of the worst investments someone could make is wrong. It might be a wrong investment for you personally, but it could still be a great investment for someone wanting a new wheel. The price of entry for a wheel with 3 pedals, and the option to add a H-shifter to the mix, is still cheaper than the offerings from either Thrustmaster or Fanatec. Sure the price has increased over the G27, and the shifter has been removed from the overall package and has to be bought separately. But I am thinking that has something to do with the licensing costs the Sony and Microsoft must have dropped on Logitech for them to release these new wheels on the PS4/Xbox one respectively.

PS3 is generally synonymous with PC compatibility and vice-versa.
