I got a really cute little netbook from my friend a few months ago, and it's just been collecting dust in my closet. I want to turn it into a security camera but all the guides i have found have not worked, i don't know if i'm doing something wrong, but it just isn't working. anyways, a huge constraint of this project is the "hard drive" storage capacity. It's only got a 4 GB Solid State drive (it's more like a flash drive, not fast at all), so it's tricky to install an OS and a program that would work with that small of drive. anyways, the netbook is pretty low power consumption, so i'm not worried about my electric bill xD. Anyone have any ideas on how to make this work? if it doesn't, i can always just do the same thing with my raspberry pi and a webcam. but i'd need to buy a webcam, and i'd rather not do that :)

Processor?

I have an Eee PC running as a media server and print server, it's got a intel atom N280 1.66GHz (It's useless for running a desktop OS, trust me, the lag is real on both a fresh Windows install and Linux) and 1GB RAM. I assume OP has similar or same specs.

Prepare yourself for a challenge as it requires a lot of time in the command line testing and configuring. You'll need Linux (I use debian) and you'll need the Motion webcam software. After installing Motion, you'll need to edit the config file (/etc/motion/motion.conf) and change its recording sensitivity, recording directory as well as resolution among other things. There are plenty of online resources available. It took me the best part of 5 hours to get my webcam running optimally as a security camera.

It's completely blown out of proportion. Also if you're the least bit worried about data gathering then you should go live in a cave a 1000Km from the nearest establishment simply because every device and every entity gathers information these days. In the current era privacy is just fallacy and nothing more.
