Long range personal network

Go to solution Solved by Scheer,

Its not illegal, or even expensive to put up 40-50' towers in most places, just a lot of paperwork and years of waiting. Buying/leasing the land to do so would be expensive though.

There is no law against a distance you can transmit, BUT there is a law on unlicensed bands for how much power you can output. There are ways around it by buying spectrum, but its not feasible for a single person to do.

I live in a subdivision outside of a rural town of about 100 people that barely has cell reception, and use a Ubiquiti nanostation that covers most of the town so I have internet at the bar and can get on my PBX so I can take calls...

Ubiquiti products are what you want to be looking at to do this, in my area all of the small telcom providers put up the large Ubiquiti panel anteanns on the town watertowers, then install a nanostation or nanobeam on their customers homes to provide internet. Range is 10-15 miles doing this, but if you were just receiving to the small antenna on your phone it will likely be under 2 miles.

Hey!, so i was wondering if it was actually possible to make like a wireless network that actually had reception all over the city.

forgive me if i said something too impractical..

but one kinda practical implementation that i think would work was like -

imagine like you build your own cellular network complete with towers and a sim card and that network is actually connected to the network at your home..

I know i may be impractical on like impossible levels but im just really curious if something like this is even possible...

snip

It's impractical and you might get in trouble with the authorities.  Even if you were using frequencies available within the free non-commercial bandwidth, there are bound to be a lot of issues

  • range of transmission
  • coverage
  • signal interference
  • cost up setting up signal boosters and repeaters, which may require permission or licensing fees to install

So it's better to setup a VPN or remote access to your home computer/server you can access using a mobile or public network.

Even large corporations that have the money to setup something like this, either use private satellite communications or VPNs or WAN/Intranets.

im sorry but i was actually talkin about the technical standpoint of this idea.. not the political ones..

also, im talking about like cellphone towers not wifi so i think range and stuff wont be that big of an issue..

It's not political, it's legality.

And technology wise, you can buy commercial hardware to set one up yourself.  They might be out of your budget range and some products might require a license to purchase.  It's not like you can just walk into a hardware store and buy components for a cellular communications tower.
