Ultrawide vs 4K

so my mum gets christmas presents from this site www.nhshomeelectronics.co.uk and my tech savy uncle is my middle man in terms of her knowing what I want. which would be better overall a 29 inch curved 1080p ultra wide.

Ive got a single 970 so im definitely leaning towards the 1080p ultrawide from a gaming aspect but with room to upgrade within the next 6 months it could be worth me going with the 4k display

I have an Ultrawide 1440p monitor. I would prefer this over a regular 16:9 4K monitor (although, admittedly, I've yet to try a 4K monitor). 

Linus prefers UW over 4K. 

Maybe UW 4K will be a thing one day. That'd be nice.

To be fair, I play 4K and manage ~50-60FPS in Fallout 4 at ultra. I just turned AA down to FXAA, and you really don't need better AA than that at 4K so...

 

I also have a U3414W, and I have to say, I use the 2x U2414H's + the 60" 4K infinitely more than I even use the ultrawide. The ultrawide is great if you want ONE monitor +- a TV, but if you like multi-monitor setups it's worthless. That being said, I use the U3415W for my other desktop as its only monitor and it's great, I don't miss the dual monitor aspect that much with it.

 

EDIT: Just realized I never stated specs. My main desktop just has one of my 980TI's in it at the moment. Granted my TI boosts to ~1.6GHz, so it's hardly running stock settings, but it definitely gets the job done. My other TI only is stable to about 1.45GHz so it's off by it's lonesome with the compy in my living room.

Yes and no. 4K at a larger size is SO MUCH MORE SCREEN REAL ESTATE. It's really mind boggling once you actually use it. At 28", sure, it's just sharper and worthless since you're going to use scaling.

 

Ultrawide is a whole new experience though. I just prefer larger screened 4K. 60" at a similar PPI to that of a 24" 1080p?

What you need to try is a low latency TV. The UN65JU7500 has 17ms of input lag. Considering this is AHVA and the PB287Q, a monitor people are quite happy with response times on, has a TN panel with 11ms response... you see my point.

 

My 60" Samsung 4K is sadly not 17ms, it's 19ms. :'( But yeah, take a look at http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/. Some TVs are viable options for real use case monitors, and 4K at larger sizes is freaking brilliant for desktops.

Ultrawide until 4k is viable more than 60+fps without costing an arm and leg. You should get a 1440p instead of a 1080p though.

Try getting a 40 inch 4k monitor. It'll be like an ultrawide with more vertical pixels.

The only issue with this (i have a 40" 4k crossover) is that while it does work pretty well, these large format 4k's still suffer from some input lag and of course the 60Hz is a drag. i also wouldn't mind if there was a subtle curve on my 40" 4k as well. but its doable and its quite nice. i've run many games in window mode 3440x18-- or whatever vertical resolution you want (obviously up to 2160)
