When to upgrade a CPU?

Once the performance of a cpu isn't enough to do what you want to do then an upgrade is a good idea.
Upgrading within the same socket isn't going to give much improvement unless going from a low end (say a Pentium or i3) to a higher performance cpu. (i5 or i7) so a cpu upgrade usually means a mobo upgrade
