GPU casing question

how hard would it be to take off the casing of a gpu for painting/customizing?

Its not too difficult you can take apart the red accent from the other parts via some screw under the shroud IIRC, their GPU's also come in multiple colors that fit different color schemes.

hmmm, think i would need to reapplying thermal compound or anything if i just change the red accents? (it is nice to see they are separate from the case themselves as well though, will make this easier)

You can take the shroud off the GPU without needing to take off the cooler itself there are screws on the side and just beneath the fan blades where you can fit a small screw driver to remove it:
