Windows 8.1 - Infinite Loop Windows Update

Go to solution Solved by petem,

Why can't you just provide a link.

I found a file, what do I use to open it?

Since the text was on the main google search page, cut and paste is easier  :D

In google, I searched for "windows where are sticky note files stored?"

and the 1st entry had the text, with a link to: http://www.pcworld.com/article/183284/sticky_notes_storage.html

but since it had the answer on the google page, I saved a few seconds by not clicking on the link and having to copy the URL from the new page.

Plus if I send the page link, then you have to read that page to find the same text I already had from the google page.

Hi. So this shit OS is stuck in an infinite loop and I have some important information on that drive yet that I don't know how to access, some of it being sticky notes as just one of them but I don't know where that data is stored on the drive. Honestly thinking about switching to Linux entirely. Is there a way I can get that drive out of an infinite loop? It's just stuck in the reboot on Windows updates and will not move on. Do I just keep waiting for like 5 hours for it to do something or can I remove an update from the drive or something? Please help.

Throw in a cheap SSD, install Windows on it, boot from it, and copy your files from the old drive.

Unless you specifically put your files somewhere else, most files will be in the C:\Users\ ... folder, but some config and game saves and what not will put their files in their install folders.

If you have a password and encrypted your content, that will not work because you won't be able to see it in the clear.

That is specifically why I keep all my data files on a separate partition - can always access them as long as the drive isn't smoking  :D

I'm using a HDD right now it's painfully slow, I have to pick which files, where can I find the sticky note files? Is there a way to save sticky notes material to a separate drive?

(Google): "But both versions save the notes in a file called StickyNotes.snt, located in the C:\Users\login\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes folder"

 Painfully slow ... : I bet it beats a floppy drive  :D

Managed to boot into the SSD miraculously. I'll try removing any recent updates. But thanks for the sticky notes stuff, I wonder if there's a way to change where it saves to.

Someone did it in windows 7, using symlinks: http://superuser.com/questions/117016/changing-location-of-sticky-notes-file-on-windows-7

It's not as easy as changing a configuration setting, but it appears to work ;)

I'm a programmer. I should be able to make a new version of sticky notes with a bit more FileIO that should work on all three main platforms. I'm pretty much done with Windows at this point. But it's good to know that someone managed to get past that, and thank you for your help. :)
