Audio Editing Build (help)

For Christmas this year I would like to build my brother a PC. There is just one issue. He uses his PC for one thing, and that is music production. He has had his laptop for a long time and I think it's time for an upgrade. The one thing is, I don't know what is needed for an audio production oriented build (why couldn't he just be a gamer or a video editor, it would be so easy) Could you please tell me the musts of an audio build? Music production covers a broad range of activities. You might look at an i7 or Xeon E3 although an i5 should be good enough, at least 8GB of memory, a decent size ssd, a large hdd, and ideally a 1440 monitor. Unless the software needs/can use a gpu, an i5/i7 with integrated gpu will do or a low end gpu for a Xeon E3.

 

You will want to check on any specialized peripherals he uses and their interfaces. USB is pretty common these days but there is still some Firewire (IEEE 1394) A and B kicking around. Thunderbolt is pretty common at the high-end.
