Hi, I have a 2TB Seagate expansion drive with USB 3 and I have a Raspberry Pi. I was looking to turn them into a cheap NAS that would do the job but I wondered what would be better: the HDD plugged into the RPI and Ethernet connection or to plug the HDD straight into the routers USB 2 port. Thanks, also what speeds do you think I could achieve? :D

the usb on your router will most likely not allow a nas, they are usually used for diagnostics and power so a pi is the only way, i made my pi into a nas not long ago if you want a tutorial give quote me on this thread

You can definatly use that port as a NAS on many router models, but the pi will probably be faster. It will still be quite slow though, the ethernet port on the pi is only 100mbit.

Many routers allow the USB on the back to be used for local storage however not all allow it to be forward externally, if you went the Pi route then you would need to get a powered usb hub (if the hdd is not self powered) and it would then allow you to use it as a cloud.

Are you able to setup something like an automatic backup to the NAS PI?
