660ti Quick help

Need some really quick help. My brother got a 660ti from a friend, we plugged it in to the pcie slot but do we need to plug in the 12 pin from the psu? The manual says we dont but that doesnt make much sense to me.

 

Yes the GPU needs the two 6 pin connectors for power
