Hi,

I am looking at upgrading my 7870xt to something that can max games fully at 1080p. I was looking at the 980ti as I might change my monitor to 1440p next year (if I've upgraded my gpu by then). What is everyone's thoughts, if the EVGA 980ti SC+ is my max budget.

i7 4790k, Asrock Pro4 matx, EVGA 980Ti SC+, H60, Patriot Viper 8GB, Samsung 840 Evo 250GB, WD Blue 500GB, Seagate Barracuda 1TB, Corsair CX600M, Fractal Design Arc Mini, Ducky Shine 3

if you do not know if you are going 1440p or not, i would just get a R9 Fury and save some bucks.

if you ARE 100% sure to get a 1440p monitor, definetively get a 980Ti or Fury X

Thanks for the replies, if I was to keep it for 4 or 5 years would the 980ti be better regardless of resolution?

that might be questionable...

Nvidia is well.. Nvidia... and who knows what they might accidentally do to their drivers once Pascal comes out.

Nvidia is also not doing so well at higher resolutions... they do not scale very well with resolution at all due to a small VRAM bus width...

If you plan to OC the shit out of the 980TI, it should last thought....

there is also the wildcard of Async Compute and Async Shaders. Which 980Ti is REALLY BAD at doing. Like abyssmally bad. AMD cards (all of them) is miles better then Nvidia on Async Compute and Shading...

So if games start leveraging these technologies in DX12, then the 980Ti might not be such a good choice.

In terms of hardware, AMDs R9 Fury X has more potential... atm it is sitting with MUCH more "raw hardware" then the 980Ti, but drivers are holding it back... drivers CAN be improved (not going to say AMD will be able to do so or not), but hardware... well, hardware is hardware....

On the flip side, Fury X only has 4GB of VRAM, which wouldnt be good for 1440p in say 4 years time... i mean atm we are already hitting the 2,5-3GB marker for 1080p....
