Would a sub £50 DAC improve the 598s sound quality noticeably?

Literally no different than most onboard audio of today.

I was told by Lays it was a good choice if you need an external dac/amp combo, most onboard audio will have some degree of noise from my experience.

 

SOC Champion has it, Z77 Extreme4 had it and 1 of my laptops has a little noise when heavy GPU load is introduced, of course I don't hear it over the game im playing.

It's a good choice if onboard actually has noise. Not necessarily the case.
