Overclocking a laptop

Hello,

So i rently aquired a laptop featuring an i7 720qm ( 1.6ghz / 2.8 boost ) and an ati mobility radeon hd 4850.

As i got this laptop for cheap ( at least where i live , i got it for 150 euros ), i was thinking of overclocking the snot out of it.

I can probably use clockgen and afterburner in order to OC , but cooling will probably be a problem.

 

I'm feeling quite adventurous .

Is there a way to mod this laptop in order to accept bigger heatsinks ?

 

I don't care how ugly it looks or how the battery life is ( even if i have to remove it entirely ).

Replacing the psu (if possible , i'll check once it arrives ) can also be an option.

 

To be clear , i know i probably could've gotten something pretty OK for the price of the extra hardware , but this is a project , it's really going to be sort of a proof of concept thing and a cool project for me.

Can't you just get a cooling pad?

 

Cooling pads don't work as well as you may think.

would that be efficient at cooling the thing ?

I wouldn't recommend it, ocing it currently would definitely lead to thermal throttling and modding the cooler isn't really practical.

I don't really care if it's practical.

I'm holding a small contest with my friends for who has the coolest moded ( on-the-cheap) laptop.

It would cool it a bit but not by a whole lot. Certainty not enough for overclocking.

Maybe i could mount a radiator to the thing ? Like in a scrapyard 2 like-way ?

I can imagine you can take the bottom cover off and make a custom cooler. Is it practical and would it work? Maybe not. But if it's just for the sake of seeing who can make the coolest mod, that'll be pretty interesting.

For cooling you could try removing all panels off the bottom of the laptop exposing the components and then tape or glue a cooling pad to it. I don't know how effective it would be, but I imagine it could work to keep all the parts cool.

That would definitely be interesting to see. If you could even fit different heatsinks on them. They'd have to be hella ghetto mounted.
