Hello LTT,

I am considering two different parts lists for a build that I will be purchasing parts for within the next two to three months.  I am trying to decide between two different specifications.  Both will use a Sapphire Radeon R9 390, two ~250gb SSDs (maybe an additional HDD), a 240mm AIO liquid cooling unit, an NZXT S340 case, and a 750W PSU.

Option 1:

-Intel Xeon E3-1231 v3 (Yes, Xeons are overclockable, and more than you would think.--->http://forums.vortez.net/overclocking-cooling/5109-how-overclock-non-k-intel-cpus.html)

-Asus Z97-A USB 3.1 Mobo (Still undecided, as I will use Micro Center to buy a CPU/Mobo combo.)

-16gb 2400mHz DDR3

Option 2:

-Intel Core i5-6600K

-ASRock Z170 Extreme4 Mobo

-8gb 2400mHz DDR4

As you can see, my main dilemma is choosing between more RAM and cores for heavier workloads, or faster speeds in some games and light productivity applications (with some newer technology coming with the newer product).  I will use the PC mostly for gaming, but I will still do a lot of content creation and engineering (Solidworks, etc.).  As I stated before, I plan to buy soon, and want the PC to last me 5 years at a MINNIMUM, though with some upgradability.

Thanks,

DAGGER51

You can put 16 GB of DDR4 in option 2... the CPU/mobo and the RAM amounts can be decided separately; why are you saying you have to choose between them?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Well, I have a very strict budget, so I'm trying not to go over that by adding more DDR4 than is really necessary with an i5, although I could add more.  In addition, has anyone seen the E3 v4 and E3 v5 chips retailing yet, because I know they've already been released?

So, I essentially have to choose between a newer platform with a slightly slower CPU (for now), or an older platform with more horsepower now.  Any opinions?
