Feedback on build list.

Rund

Hi LTT forum,

I made a list of parts i'd like to use for my first build using PCPartPicker. I'd appreciate your feedback, tips and recommendations. This is the first time i'm doing this so let me know if i'm forgetting some essential parts. I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers. This is just about the pc itself.  I'll be using Ethernet so a wireless network adapter isn't necessary right now. Also what other items will i need to put it all together? (e.g. thermal compound etc).

Pretty good build. That PSU is a bit Overkill though, a good 650-700W should be enough for a single GPU configuration.

Ghetto Gaming Rig:
Intel Core i5-4690k; MSI Z97- Gaming 5; 8 gig Hyperx Savage; Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming; XFX XTR 650W; 120 gig Samsung 850evo SSD; Fractal Define S; Logitech G502; HP Pavilion 23xw monitor.

go with a dual channel kit of ram and a better cpu cooler if you plan on doing any real overclocking other than that its pretty good

Thanks for the quick replies,

Just a few questions: what are the advantages of getting a dual channel RAM kit? And is there a noticeable performance boost when i'll get 16GB instead of 8? Because i will not be editing videos or rendering 3D graphics. Just some graphic & web design and gaming.

(edit: grammar)

Try to get a caviar black HDD.

The blue has SSD Cache which you will not use as a boot drive, making it redundant.

Thanks for pointing that out.  :)

I'll look in to that.

you can get the same model just a lower wattage... the 650 watts is on sale right now i believe for like 60 bucks after rebate at newegg which is a damn good price and for coolers i would recommend the dark rock pro 3 or the noctua nh d14 or 15 if you dont mind the look of the noctua fans

If you're going with the Dark Rock Pro you wanna make sure first it fits in your case as it is quite a big cooler. RAM should be fine as long as they are low profile sticks.

About the PSU i think EVGA is a solid choice, maybe you can check at XFX or Silverstone, as they make pretty good quality stuff too. Just don't cheap out on that so that you won't have any problems in the long run. Also if you're overclocking is nice to have a good stable PSU.

Everything else will be fine for 1080p gaming and you'll probably be able to max out pretty much every game for quite a while, actually you could easily play 1440p with a system like that.

As long as dual channel memory goes you won't see any differences with single channel in gaming, plus you get to add another 8 gig stick in the future, which usually goes a bit cheaper than 2x4 kits.

Thank you for your advice. And about the ram, that was exactly what I was thinking, getting 1 8gb stick and being able to easily upgrade in the future.
