2.how would I update the bios on an msi z77a-g43 motherboard? Do I just launch the application or is there a special process?

1) Yes

2) Read your manual, seriously. Dont fuck around with bios updates, make damn sure you are doing it properly cause if you dont you will be buying a new motherboard.

Yes, BIOS updates are cumulative.

No, don't "just run the executable". There is a very specific order of operations, and you cannot get it wrong (meaning that if you do get it wrong, you're screwed). Read your motherboard's manual (you know, the booklet you threw away years ago :)) and of course read the readme.txt file that comes with the BIOS rom. I've done BIOS updates many times and I still don't like doing it.

Expensive motherboards will let you recover a corrupted BIOS yourself, while cheaper boards will require you to send it in to the manufacturer for servicing.
