Could you do a PCPartPicker instead of a PDF?

Join the Appleitionist cause! See spoiler below for answers to common questions that shouldn't be common!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

Really not enjoying that PDF dude...

Anyway, I would reccomend you bump the CPU down to a core i5-4690k with appropriate 8 GB of DDR3 and Z97 motherboard.  Also, replace the M.2 SSD whatever one it is to a Samsung 850 Evo.  With the saved money get a better gpu eg r9 390x.  At the least swap out the 970 for an r9 390 which will perform a little better at the same price.

Okay thanks, so an i5 would be fine for these sort of games, and future games like the new Deus Ex?

An i7 provides little/no benefit in games and will likely never, at least until you need an entirely new system anyway.

This is because the main performance difference from i5 -> i7 is the hyperthreading, which allows two entirely different things to happen on each core.  This doesn't double performance but kicks it up considerably in heavily threaded use such as video encoding.  But games usually only utilize 2-4 cores anyway and so having effectively double the cores won't do you anything.  But on the other hand, spending the extra money on an improved graphics card will improve gaming performance considerably.

Ah makes sense! What about the GPU, I always thought NVIDIA were better, with their software and V-Sync. Never been with AMD, would I lose or gain anything?

  1. cpu is great. don't listen to those who tell you to get an i5. if you can afford it, go for it. if you are under a strict budget, go with the 6600k instead and a more powerful gpu
  2. get a better cpu cooling solution. for the i7, get the phanteks ph-tc14, the nocuta u14s or nh-d14 or 15, or the h100i gtx
  3. get a less expensive motherboard
  4. 8gb of ram is fine for gaming
  5. i would get an r9 390x or gtx 980 instead
  6. don't get the cx psu. you need an evga b2, g2, or gs. or, an xfx, antec, or seasonic psu

You will lost the ability to use G-Sync but this requires a compatible monitor and they are quite expensive.

You will get improved FPS per £ with AMD's r9 3xx series vs. nvidia's GTX 9xx series.

Also that CX PSU is a total pile of shit.  Please don't get it as you will be risking your components.  Check out XFX's TS 500 W unit.

Ah okay, So I shall go with an AMD - dont see myself buying an expensive monitor just for G-Sync

- snip -

Why would you choose Skylake?  IMO it provides little/no benefit for simple gaming systems like this one and also requires more expensive RAM and motherboards vs. Haswell.  That money could then go into a better GPU which would improve performance, and to a far greater extent than a Skylake CPU.  Similarly, while an i7 will theoretically improve things slightly, you are much better off going for an i5 and again, improving the GPU.

I would say, aim for as much savings as possible in other areas without compromising product quality (eg. CX PSU is a piece of shit and not worth saving money for) and using this to get a better GPU which is of course the single most important item in terms of gaming performance.

Is there any cheaper AMD or NVIDIA GPU, preferred AMD as I was just told you can get more FPS for the money.

Yeh, I will buy each component myself and that would save money, I'd like a cheaper system just for college work, and good gaming specs for Black Ops and future games

Well, there is the r9 380 which is similar to the GTX 960 although a little faster.  It holds up decently in 1080p situations and can reach ultra settings with 40-60 FPS in plenty of games but there isn't a lot of future proofing in it.

Here is a budget build list I made up a while ago.  Sure the i3 CPU isn't optimal and this could be exchanged for one of the Haswell i5 chips eg. i5-4590 but overall it is quite balanced.

I currently have a 660. I'd like to get 60FPS at least on Black Ops and GTA whilst still having good graphics. Yeh, I don't think an i3 would be good Enough, and an i5 would be okay

Well in a budget constrained environment my linked build would hold up excellently.

But I agree it is not what you are looking for.

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/cNWBK8 is rather better suited.  Pick an ATX case that you like the look of as well.  The one you have chosen will work fine
