I could say I am pretty wise with my money as I only spend about $300 ever year and the rest is saved in my bank account. Over the last couple years it has just slowly been adding up. It isn't some crazy amount like 50K I don't have a job but it is a decent amount. I am currently not 18 but still can do it through my parents but I was toying with the idea of investing. I know it isn't some easy thing and takes time and activity every day. I am and have taken a couple economic, business, marketing, and accounting classes so I know how this stuff works. What do you think? I had been using HowTheStockMarketWorks.com and it is based off the real stock market but you don't use real money and I made a profit of $3,000 after investing in AMD.

I could say I am pretty wise with my money as I only spend about $300 ever year and the rest is saved in my bank account. Over the last couple years it has just slowly been adding up. It isn't some crazy amount like 50K I don't have a job but it is a decent amount. I am currently not 18 but still can do it through my parents but I was toying with the idea of investing. I know it isn't some easy thing and takes time and activity every day. I am and have taken a couple economic, business, marketing, and accounting classes so I know how this stuff works. What do you think? I had been using HowTheStockMarketWorks.com and it is based off the real stock market but you don't use real money and I made a profit of $3,000 after investing in AMD.

I got that. That is why I am not investing all my money it is just my slush money I have a separate account for my college savings. I wouldn't invest it all in one but rather more in other safer stocks that have a less chance to loose. Then again if I had invested in VW

Uh, that's a huge risk. People get paid six figure salaries to do that for a reason. If you want a better way (for an average Joe) to invest your money, I recommend that you look into mutual funds.

Uh, that's a huge risk. People get paid six figure salaries to do that for a reason. If you want a better way (for an average Joe) to invest your money, I recommend that you look into mutual funds.

If you invest wisely and have a diverse portfolio the risks are still there but you make it sound like it will kill you. Yes, people have lost everything on the stock market. Yes, people have won everything on the stock market. But, at the end of the day for the past 90 years the stock market has been growing at an average of 11% a year.

 

Yeah, I currently only have one investment and that's in Southwest Airlines. I bought it when it was at $20 now it's at $45. I recommend reading a book about investments (The Motley Fool has some good books). I'm looking into AMD as well, funnily enough. It's in a terrible financial situation making it a very risky buy. But, if Zen and Greenland succeed you'll be raking in cash. It's either boom or bust. So, yeah. :D I had to put in my opinion because from the other posts it made it sound that investing was worse than getting the plague.

There's almost no reason for him to not go for a mutual fund over directly investing in stocks. The biggest drawback would be the financial institution taking a sizeable chunk of the growth in fees, but that shouldn't happen if the company is good.

 

Edit: I know I shouldn't be that pessimistic about playing with the stock market, but I always recommend something like a mutual fund before going in deep.

There's almost no reason for him to not go for a mutual fund over directly investing in stocks. The biggest drawback would be the financial institution taking a sizeable chunk of the growth in fees, but that shouldn't happen if the company is good.

 

Edit: I know I shouldn't be that pessimistic about playing with the stock market, but I always recommend something like a mutual fund before going in deep.

A mutual fund won't have as much risk but also won't have as much reward. It also is impacted heavily by government issues.

I placed a $160 investment. I also paid $10 as a commission fee. Investing $300 will already put you down 3.3%. Not pushing you away just don't expect to make huge gains. But, with AMD you may get huge gains. :D

A mutual fund won't have as much risk but also won't have as much reward. It also is impacted heavily by government issues. 

 

I've been investing in a few funds. One of them has grown 14%. It's supposed to be pretty conservative... One lucky year I guess. The other ones have grown 11%, and 12% after a few years. Not bad, in my opinion, for safe investing.

 

Well i invested 10K in fake money and it went down to 9K but now just keeps rising and is over 13K
