My dad's HTPC (Lenovo M58p) has an E8400 in it and this thing idles at around 54C, with a few background programs running (CPU is at about 30% usage or maybe 20%). I did recently change the thermal paste and I made sure the cooler was mounted correctly. When I changed the paste, the idles were at about 38C and sometimes 40C but it's sloly crept back up. What should I do? By the way, I replaced the old factory paste that's there for like 5-6 years with some basic Arctic Alumina. Thanks :D

Try grabbing some new thermal paste and maybe a new cooler if the case can accommodate it.

I've had better luck with cheap Thermacoolflux paste from Amazon than with Alumina. Try a different paste.

I had this same problem, except I have an E7500. I changed the thermal paste, which was extremely crusty and old, and the temperatures dropped significantly, even though I was still using the stock cooler. I used Noctua NTH1.

Alright, thanks guys, I will try a new paste. I used this paste because it was literally the cheapest one that I could find so...
