Can anyone make sense of this thing?

For £700 or $1,100 you get this :-

3.0GHz / 3.5GHz Turbo

Dual Core

5MB L3 Cache

To me it seems like a waste of silicon (just like the Celerons) since it is an 8 core die with 20MB of cache.

This thing has me confused so if anyone knows why this exists then it would be greatly appreciated.

apparently its for servers

It is for servers but I don't understand why it costs so much, this is half of the cost of that and it comes with 15MB of cache and 6 cores though

Intel is so smart that they can overprice it so much!

Maybe it has some specialist use but to be honest I've never seen anything like that, just a waste in my opinion

Also for £200 more you can get an 8 core E5

That is a strange one. I thought at first that it might be a listing error but having had a hunt around it looks about right.

There will be a reason behind this and it will have a specialist application for sure. Server-grade kit is always more expensive but this is something else!

E5-2xxx means it can be used in dual-CPU systems.  The system bus is the expensive part, since it needs to be really beefy compared to standard CPUs to allow for communication between two CPUs.
