Old GPU Crashes sporadically before/after booting into windows

I got this old GT 9800 from a guy off craigslist for a graphics card experiment, and it worked fine for a while, but after a while it started to bug out on me and the screen would go all fuzzy. The peripherals would also stop working, and i would need to reboot the system.

 

Now, i could get it to work fine for the most part, but occasionally it would crash again. Another problem i had was that it also sometimes crashed right after pressing the power button. Any help?

 

PS. The gpu was overheating, but after reapplying thermal paste, it seems to have gotten better. However, it still lingers around 40-55 degrees C.
