Computer freezing during benchmark and games

Go to solution Solved by Avcoor,

Hi,

The bios I am currently using is the most up to date according to the MSI website. Have you found a solution to the problem?

I think you did all that could be done.

RMA the board.

As for the RAM, test it in another system or when the new board arrives, if it is still slower than advertised RMA it too.

My newly built computer keeps freezing at random times while playing any game or benchmark. The freezing will be random as it could go for a day or 2 without any issues. Once it freezes, there is a looping sound and no input devices will work. The only way to get out is with a manual restart. After restarting, there is no error messages or BSOD errors found.

Things I have already done:

Memory test - passed

Intel Burn test - passed

Reinstalled windows - 3 times (cleaning registry as well)

Updated and reinstalled all Motherboard and GPU drivers countless times

I have exchanged my GPU for a brand new GTX 980ti and the problem still persists.

Also, everything is on stock speeds and not OC'd

My system is not overclocked and is adequately cooled with the Kraken x61. I use both cpu and gpu temperature monitoring program and have no temperature issues. The motherboard Bios is up to date as well. I have no viruses or malware. I have checked for the integrity of my SSD and it passed with no errors. I have reseatted all the parts that I can making sure the power connects are properly connected.

System Specs:

Windows 10

i7 5820k

MSI x99a SLI PLUS

Kraken x61

G.Skill Ripjaws 4

Corsair 760AXI

Crucial MX100 250gb SSD

GTX 980TI

This problem has been occurring since I first built this computer 2 weeks ago. I have been troubleshooting since.

I was wondering if there is anything else you guys can suggest me to do prior to RMA the motherboard which I am int he process of doing as I think I have covered pretty much everything I can think of

Well... You tested everything and they seem OK. Just to be sure, do the same tests of your hardware on another system so you can definitely exclude them.

CPU problems are rare but not impossible.

The culprit is most likely the MoBo.

Same thing happened on my X99S SLI Plus

So you just completely changed Motherboards? Cause I can still exchange it I believe as I have only had it for 2 weeks.

Well, if you want to wait just RMA it.

If you don't want to wait and have access to another system test it to be sure what's wrong.

Have you considered bringing down your stock clocks on you gpu? You might even have a dying stick of RAM

I have tested the ram with memtest64 and it came back with no errors and it never freezes if im not doing anything graphically intensive

The gpu is brand new. I exchanged it yesterday. Is there a reason to bring the stock speed even lower? I dont even feel like its a gpu or software related issue at this point.

RAM is configured correctly?

Sounds like a problem I had many years ago.

It's not a race to the bottom.

I most certainly hope so, I followed the manual and put it into dual channel as i have 2 sticks of 8gb. Its not overclocked or anything and its being detected.

Used XMP or manually input your timings / volts?

None of the above actually, No XMP or input any timings or volts. Just put them in and didnt change any settings. Stock setting should already be at safe timings and volts if im not mistaken

You have to put those settings in.

It will use default settings, which for instance instead of

2666 @ 13-13-13-30 2T 1.3V it will use

2133 @ 11-11-11-27 1T 1.35V

When building / using computers 95% of my problems are always caused from bad memory, incorrect settings of the memory or incompatible memory.

Memory is not a USB, it's not plug and play. Which is why XMP is used for those who don't want to / know how to correctly set it up.

Mine are definitely on default settings, I think the XMP setting OC's the RAM.

This is the RAM i have http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_311_1326&item_id=086616

It seems the stock volts are at 1.2

Thank you for your suggestions btw.

Also, if it was defective RAM.. wouldnt the issues show up on Memtest?

So i also found that my RAM cannot run at the advertised speed of 2800mhz.

When i use XMP to bring it to 2800mhz and 1.2v, the system crashes very shortly, but when i reset it back to default settings then everything is fine.
