Dual Booting Windows and Linux

Hey so in Windows I made a dedicated partition of my SSD for Linux, however, when I try going through the process of installing Linux to that drive, it keeps giving me some weird error message. Is there a reason for this? Can someone help guide me through the dual boot process?

"No root file system is defined" I have 100 GB set aside just for Linux and the file system format is NTFS - not sure if that's why it's not working

You need to assign "root" "/" to the partition when installing. You need to have root, /home, and a swap area.

 

Edit: And while linux will run on ntfs just fine, it much prefers to use ext4 by default. I would boot into windows and just remove the 100gb partition and leave it unallocated for your install.

would is just be easier if i installed linux first then windows or something

Installing Linux after windows is preferred, windows after Linux is usually more difficult.

Does it give you an option to install beside Windows? Also what Linux distribution are you trying to install?
