If you're only gaming, the i5 will work fine. Just get a higher-end newer one like a 6600.

For gaming, at this current point in time, there is little to no benefit to using an i7 over an i5 aside from the higher clock speeds out of the box for the i7-4790k and the 6700k, but that can quickly be negated by overclocking the i5 if you get an unlocked one, but even that is unnecessary to get a good gaming experience. A lot of people do fine with just an i5-4460 or similar.

Why is the God of Hyperdeath SO...DARN...CUTE!?

Also, if anyone has their mind corrupted by an anthropomorphic black latex bat, please let me know. I would like to join you.

Can you please clarify if you want to use the CPU (and maybe a video card) to just play games and nothing else, or if you mean that you want to game using only the CPU (and no video card)?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Ah ok (the joys of English eh? :))

Traditional wisdom has been that games won't use more than 4 threads (so get the i5), but there have been tests suggesting otherwise in certain cases, and the market is always changing; it's been "4 threads FTW" for a while now and you never know when 6 or 8 will start being useful.

I should say though that when it comes to more threads, that video suggests that to get the benefit (if there is any) you need an actual 8 core processor; a 4 with HT (ie. the i7) won't likely be any better than the i5

Inglish iz hard :))

Building a PC is harder than I taught there are too many factors to consider... :)). Well I wanted to go with the i7 because in my mind I wanted to use the same CPU for at least 3-4 years , while changing the graphics card after 1-2 years... what do you think?

Those sound like reasonable timelines more or less.  I look at it this way: is the i5 going to do as well in every current game?  Yeah, I believe so.  Will that trend continue?  Maybe, but no one knows.  I kind of hope 2 or 3 years from now tops we will start to see a benefit to i7's and above, but it might not happen.

I've got an i7 because I do more than just games, and in hindsight, I would have actually been much better off with an overclocked 6 or 8 core, but A ) that's a lot more expensive, and B ) If I had had the luck with a 6 or 8 core that I did with my i7, I would be really mad since overclocking an i7 is nice, but overclocking a 6 or 8 core is essential if you want to match per core performance.

anyways, I would say if an extra $100 is worth the piece of mind, go with the i7, but Linus always says build what gets you what you need now, so if you follow that, get the i5.

heh, now that's another whole debate.  you could go with the new Skylake 6600 or an older but still excellent 4690.  It depends on the pricing in your country.  I know here the Z170 stuff is ludicrous compared to Z97 but in other places it's worth the upgrade.  Then there is the debate of over clocking.  If you want to, you will need the K series of whatever you pick.

You could also go for a not-top-of-its-class i5 liek the 4460; I know some have a better price/performance ratio, but I always like going the highest class in the line :)

I7 has 4 cores & 4 "fake" cores known as threads 2 threads = 1 "fake" core I7 has 8 threads the I5 however only got 4 threads means 2 logical "fake" cores" instead of 4  for the I7

Means

I7 has 8 cores (with logical cores)

I5 only has 6 cores (with logical cores)

These are indeed only needed for videoediting YouTube stuff recording whatever...

These are common I7's & I5's (8 threads) (4 threads)

What are you talking about?  the i7 has 4 physical cores that can each run 2 threads (2 logical cores per physical).  the i5 has 4 physical cores that each to one thread (1 logical core per physical).  i5s do not have 6 cores and do not have 2 logical cores

Skylake is more powerful and has more consistency between chips which is good for not "losing the silicon lottery", but depending on your country it might or might not be really expensive by comparison.  If it's like $100 more, then it's definitely not worth it.

and what game is that?

Responses like theses are why I bought an i5, now the game I built my PC to run requires an i7. Go with the i7 f you have the budget.

Is this in response to Fallout 4?  Those specs are a joke and we all know it, let's wait for some real benchmarks before judging :)

and what game is that?

Fallout 4 has a 4790K i7 CPU listed in the system requirements. I played the Battlefront beta and I was able to play, but my CPU temps were higher than when stress testing using AIDA64 or Intel XTU. If I had a time machine, I'd have a 4790K.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Well, maybe the tides are changing.  I said they probably would, I just didn't expect it to be happening under my nose as I write :)

I was pissed when the system requirements were released for Fallout 4. I was utterly shocked by my CPU straining to run Battlefront. I'm running at 4.6GHz too.

My 290, I had it on the stock clock and it's temps were below that of running Valley. Hate to use the word, but that's a bottleneck.
