So I'm planning to switch out my old gpu (AMD MSI R7750) to a new one (MSI GTX 970) for 2 reasons:

1. For better gaming experience

2. My R7750 which I have been using for 3 years+ died :/

I'm kinda new in the PC Enthusiast hobby, so pardon my ignorance :)

So my issue here is that I'm not sure whether my rig can support the upcoming GTX 970 upgrade.

Specifically I'm worried about my motherboard here as I don't know if it can support the 970.

Need you helpful lot to help me out here.

Thanks!

Rig :-

CPU: AMD FX Quad-Core 4100

Motherboard: GA-970A-DS3

RAM: 2x4GB Avexir

PSU: SeaSonic 860w Platinum

Case: Corsair 600T

NOTE: I was on a tight budget when I build my rig, which was 3 years ago. So pardon the lame components :P

Get a 380 for that price with better performance.

It will be fine to use on that morherboard. But your going to see some major bottlenecks with that CPU

R9 380 + i5 4460/i3 4130 is what I'd get

the FX CPU is a big bottleneck for any card above a 370.

You should be fine.

Your GPU can be underused in certain tasks because of your CPU, but that isn't true of all tasks,

It's like using a Core 2 Duo with a 970 >.>

Haha that's not the first time I got that reaction.

A 380 eh? Hmm... I don't know a whole lot about that card, but it performs better than a 970 for the price you say?

Now that you mentioned it, yeah. The price point in my country for the 390 is similar with the 970.

But I don't know a whole lot abt the 390 though. Gotta do more research on this! xD

Or we can just tell you how it is

1. Its more powerful than the 970

2. Its louder than the 970

3. It runs hotter than the 970

4. Its more powerful than the 970

5. Its priced similarly

a 380 and a new CPU is probably your best balanced option

A 390 is a better card than the 970 but both of them won't really be used properly with your CPU

390X>980

390>970

380>960

Each AMD card costs less and has better performance with minimal power consumption increase (around 50W more).

Fair enough. Although now, my concern is the heat output. I'm not using any hydro/liquid cooling, I'm going all open-air currently. Is that healthy enough to run a 390?

Also, is it worth the few additional dollars to jump to a 390x straight or is the 390 good enough for me?

You dont need any liquid cooling. Get a R9 390 from MSI or Sapphire and your good to go...after you have upgraded that CPU.

If you are on 1080p i would say stick to the 390. But if you have more cash or are running games in 1440p feel free to buy a R9 390X.

Again, would recommend you either buy from MSI or Sapphire.

You don't have to worry about the gpu build, MSI has always been my go-to build for gpu's ;)

lol okay2 I got it. But this is where my lack of knowledge rears it ugly head... I don't know much about cpus.

Generally the i5 should be okay right?

Yes, generally i5 4460 is recommend as a cheaper i5. But if you feel like burning cash to get the latest and get an entire 10% performance boost you can go with the a little bit too expensive i5 6600k and a a little bit to expensive Z170 motherboard.

Isnt it amazing?!?!?!  :P:o An entire 10% boost for 150$

Yeah I guess I gotta upgrade it :/

Btw here's what I don't quite understand about the 4-digit numbers on a cpu.

Example:

What's the difference between an i5 4460 vs. an i5 4590?

Although I could go all out with an i7 IF i've got the cash to burn XP

first digit - generation

other 3 digits - the performance

i5 4460 will be 4% slower than an i5 4590 - mine has a 100-200MHz factory OC :D

@Antivenom101

or you could get get the FX 6300 a 6 core AMD. Plenty of bang for your buck :D

FX-6300 is almost just as bad. I would suggest upgrading to an i3 and investing in a cheaper GPU (for now), or wait until you have more money for an i3 + GTX 970. The i3 outperforms an 8350 in gaming. Depends on that you want to do really. Don't be fooled by the amount of cores, as you can upgrade to an i5 later on.

http://www.techspot.com/review/972-intel-core-i3-vs-i5-vs-i7/page5.html

https://teksyndicate.com/videos/amd-fx-8350-vs-intel-3570k-vs-3770k-vs-3820-gaming-and-xsplit-streaming-benchmarks

Compares the i3-4160 to i5s, and i7 CPUs. Only slightly lower FPS (depending on the game). That's without being overclocked. It's hard to find actual benchmarks between an i3 and FX-8350 without digging, but you can see the 8350 is far behind an i5. i3 is only slightly behind. My 8320 does show its age.

Linus made a decent video comparing i3s, i5s, and i7 processors. Big different between intel and amd cores!
