Hi

I have three 1080p 24inch monitors, I currently have two hooked up. My graphics card is a Sapphire HD 7870 XT basically a HD 7950 with less vram, it will only allow me to run two monitors at a time....the third one will come up in windows but cannot receive any output from my PC, I can switch between any two monitors but only two will run at any given time.

Any ideas why this is happening ? can my card even run three ?

Thanks guys

It sounds like you have enough ports... Is the 3 together exceeding the maximum resolution it can drive?

But yes your card can run 3. Apparently it can run 6, according to the website.

With any of the the cards in the 7000 series or earlier (including some 200 series rebrands) you need an active Display Port adapter to have the 3rd monitor working.

GCN 1.0 cards like the 7870 XT only support up to 2 monitors via the DVI-HDMI controller. Any other monitors will have to be run via VGA or DisplayPort. If none of your monitors have VGA or DisplayPort input, you will need to use a signal converter from a VGA or DisplayPort output on your graphics card, passive adapter cables will not work.

Thank you so much for the information! I can't find any active mini display port to DVI adapters in New Zealand....might have to get one from the states

You can use a full size DP to DVI converter, and a regular Mini DP to full DP cable to connect it to your GPU if you want.

So it doesn't matter what cable combo is used as long as there is a active adapter in there somewhere ?

It does matter, but specifically a DP-to-DP cable doesn't affect anything. Whether you plug in the converter to a DP port, or a Mini DP port through an adapter doesn't matter, because DP and Mini DP are identical other than the physical shape of the port, which doesn't affect the electrical signal.
