really depends on luck. 4690k and get around 4 ghz with stock. 6600k probably has improved designs and can get a bit higher. I would say 4.3-ish?

Specs: i7-4790k with Thermaltake Water 3.0, EVGA GTX 970, MSI Z97 Gaming 3, Kingston HyperX 2x8 DDR3 1600Mhz, SSD Boot Drive/1TB HD, CM Storm Stryker, EVGA Supernova G2 750W

Peripherals: SS Rival, HyperX Cloud, G710+

Hi guys.

So my older brother decided to get an i5 6600k now and later down the line get a 6700k. What kind of OC can he expect to get without really changing voltages?? He will be using the hyper 103 as his CPU cooler.

wait, you have a 6600k and are planning to upgrade to a 6700k?  Did you also buy a GTX 980 so you can upgrade to a 980ti in a little while?

Sorry it just seems a little strange

hes hoping to get a minimum 4.2ghz to at least compete slightly with the 4790k in most games.

You don't even need any sort of OC for most games. Only for a handful worst case cenarios the CPU will be of any relevance. And in those, the better IPC of skylake will make up for the lower clocks.

Regardless, just find out by yourself. When OCing, expect NOTHING AT ALL, it's always a risk. Go out, and discover the actual potential of your chip.

I agree that is not normal at all

He wants the new tech. Can't afford the 6700k so he opted he for 6600k. He thought because it has a higher number it would be better. I have the 4790k and tried to convince him to get the same as me but he listened to his friend who thought the higher number the better.

If there is a pinned thread anywhere about rookie mistakes, top of the list has to be believing that Intel's naming of anything means anything at all

Depending on the cooling too, better cooling=more overclocking (generally speaking) He should probably be able to get 4.4, 4.5. Just make sure it doesn't go above 55~

55C?  I agree that's probably a good temp to shoot for but it's hardly dangerous to go over that

... and keeping your room at a lower temperature :P

The engineer in me has to elaborate on that last point just for my own piece of mind:

Obviously, if you OC and you are consuming more electricity and thus producing more heat (and the temp is higher as a result) the room will heat up faster, but just being hotter won't necessarily heat the room quicker.  Consider a very low power but poorly cooled chip.  Say it's consuming 10 or 20 watts but sitting at 90 C.  The room will heat up much slower than a CPU consuming 80 watts and sitting at say 50 C.

Sorry, not implying you don't know this - you probably do - I just had to. :P

55°C is a very aggressive target. You don't need it to run that cool. I wouldn't want it to get much hotter than 75°C, but below that you don't really need to worry about it's lifespan.

Yes, "lower is better," but mostly for other reasons. Quieter fans, less heat dispersed into your case, etc.
