Hey guys!

So I'm not too sure what to do with my new system...

I am definitely getting a samsung 840 Evo, most probably the 250gb version for my boot and applications.

But for my storage and backup is the issue.

I was thinking about getting either 2 WD Blue 1tb, one for storage, one for backup. Or one WD Blue and one WD Black using the black for storage and the blue for backups.

How much of a performance gain would I get from that, seeing as the black is approx $25 more than the blue.

And what other setups would be better? Im looking at the least cost for the most performance (like most people).

Thanks!

The extra performance of a black is not worth the cost. It wouldn't make that much of a difference unless you were using it as a primary drive anyway.

Get a barracuda if it's the same price or cheaper than the blue since it is marginally better performing. Otherwise, just stick with the blue.

Get a 250gb 840 pro for os. And get 2 1tb wd red drives and put them in raid 1 for maximum reliability.

Are the reds faster than blacks? Im not so much looking for reliability as much as speed, but I would like to have a backup drive. Also I wouldnt mind backing up the SSD aswell as I dont think id go over 1tb of used storage all up so the backup drive would be enough.

The difference in performance of the 840 Pro and the normal 840 is negligible. Don't spend more for the Pro.

Standard blues and barracudas are fine for Raid 1. Reds will be slower and more expensive.

It's great. Barracudas are good performers at a good value.

Red drives are somewhere between blue and very close to black. They spun at 5600 rpm. And they make less noise. You won't see a significant performance difference. If you want faster read speeds for your games use a cheap 60-64 Gbps ssd as cache using intel smart response to accelerate the raid 1 setup.

Would this be good for a Intel smart response cache? My mobo supports msata so it makes for easy install:
