Dear all,

I  tried to update my Nvidia driver to 355.98 (windows 10, 64 bit, international , whql) using Nvidia Geforce Experience. It removed the previous driver, but the installation of the new driver (355.98) failed, leaving me with a window that looked like this: http://d2pjkmg335qfp5.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/yh0VQ.png

I then downloaded the Nvidia driver (355.98) from the Nvidia website, and attempted to install it, but the install failed again (even when selecting clean install). I even tried installing previous drivers, such as 355.62, but that also failed.

I followed the instructions on this webpage: http://www.custompcguide.net/2-methods-to-fix-nvidia-installer-failed-issue-for-geforce-video-cards/

This involved using Drive Sweeper to wipe all data related to Nvidia. I attempted to install the Nvidia driver again, but it failed again.

I tried using Windows Update, but the install for that failed, stating:

- Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3093266) - Error 0x8000ffff

-  nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Graphics Adapter WDDM2.0, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 - Error 0x8007ffff

- NVIDIA driver update for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 - Error 0x8007ffff

I fear that I may have to 'refresh' my Windows 10 system, which was originally Windows 8, but updated (for free). What should I do now?

I would be grateful for any assistance.

Before doing anything weird try this:

  • Make sure on-board graphics chipset is deactivated and BIOS is set to use current discrete video card as main.
  • Make sure your motherboard BIOS is running the latest firmware.
  • Hard Drive is not too full. There were many cases when NIVIDA setup could not extract the packet into the Temp folder because the target drive was packed.
  • Antivirus program or Firewall should not give any issue but it’s worth some attention. Disable it just in case. Don’t forget to enable it the next time your browse brazzer the Internet.
  • Try your video card on a different PCIe slot or different computer to see whether the same issue occurs. You may find a way to rule out the possibility that the motherboard or the video card is defective.
  • Run a quick file system check using the command sfc /scannow to make sure the Windows core has not been altered or violated.

I'm going to try reseating the GPU (i.e. removing it and re-inserting it), and see if that helps. Thank you for your advice.
