Windows Memory Test & Random Shutdowns

Hi All,

I thought I had solved my problem with random shutdowns of my new Rebuilt PC, however a month later it has started all over again.

Previous Thread - http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/435166-new-build-random-shutdowns/

The PC was shutting down randomly, usually while playing games. I plugged the PC into the Battery side of my UPS and that seemed to do the trick.

Anyway a month later it has started to happen again, so Ive plugged the power for the PC directly into the wall socket (thinking maybe it was time to replace the battery in the UPS) and Im still having shutdowns

- so I figure its not the UPS. Im still getting Critical Kernel-Power Event Id 41 (task Category 63)

After some googling and working on the assumption it must be then either the motherboard, CPU, the RAM, or the new PSU ive started by running a Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.

Can anyone tell me what the results might mean? -

Do you have spare ram mobo cpu etc.

CPU: 2x E5620 - GPU: 2x GTX660 - RAM: 64gb DDR3 ECC - Mobo: Z800 OEM - Storage:1TB WD Green - 256gb - Micron C400 250gb - 850 EVO - 512gb 850 PRO

It sounds like a thermal problem, run some temperature monitoring software (HwInfo works, and Coretemp is fine with me, although others say bad things about it) and then run some kind of stress testing software, and see if it shuts down under load again. Did the memory diagnostics say the memory was alright? If you want to check your ram a bit more thoroughly, use MemTest, they have a bootable USB or CD image.

Eeh, by gum.

I'm running open hardware monitor and according to that the CPU never gets hotter than about 55deg Celsius. I'm not sure what the memory test is telling me that's what my post is asking...

There's nothing wrong with the log. If it found a memory error, it either won't complete, or Windows will pop up with a notification after you've booted back into it.

Can you monitor the temperature of your graphics card?

Last question, does it shut down, or reboot?

According to OHM it doesn't get much beyond 60 deg celcius but I'd be lying if I said I watch the temps constantly. It shuts down, then reboots perfectly into windows. Only thing different about bootup then is there is a "slightly longer than post beep" beep, about 1 to 2 seconds before the regular single post beep.

Those temps shouldn't be high enough to send you PC rebooting, although you might want to check the bios to see if there are any temperature warning settings.

It's also very possible that your power supply is overheating, and causing the reboot, or failing altogether, do you have anything you can swap it out with?
