Hey guys, would this CPU be suitable for my 7850? I know I could get better CPU's for gaming but it is all I have laying around and is better than my E5506 and my audio program likes my X3430 more :P

I would say it should work just fine, but it depends on what games. Games that are more CPU bound or that prefer higher core clocks will slow down more.

Aight, Well a question.. Why does my mobo (Supermicro X8SIA-F) say the multiplier is unlocked but it is locked to max multiplier x18

Hmm, where are you seeing multiplier unlocked? I don't see it mentioned anywhere on the SuperMicro website.

It says it when I go to change the Multiplier.. I can get a picture if you want

Picture would help. I have a feeling the unlocked multiplier only applies to CPU ratio overclockable CPUs and not the Xeon.

Yes, i am using the IPMI feature :P

Oh, I see. It says Ratio is unlocked....if you want to go under 18x (stock), not over. The range is 09x to x18).

Oh ok.. I thought it meant you could go over x18 :P I am guessing this CPU isn't OCable?

A lot of boards tend to do that, the ratio is unlocked up to a value.

LGA1156 overclocking was generally not done by multiplier anyway. You used the base frequency. So i3s, xeons etc are all overclockable given a supporting board.

E.g.

d36clf.png

Multi locked to x24, but I can increase the stock base speed from 133Mhz to whatever I want (until it stops working...).

Overclocking changed after this generation to the multiplier based overclocking we see today (boo).

If my mobo can't adjust Base Clock through bios is there a software kinda like msi afterburner but for cpus?

You might get away with SetFSB if you can identify the PLL of your motherboard.

Its the clock generator that sets the base clock, I'd recommend reading up on it as I can't really explain it that well.

But looking at your board the PLL seems to be near the PCI slot

I can't find a clear enough picture to straight up tell you I'm afraid.

Yeah just did some research on finding the PLL and there is a program called CPUCooL and it should tell me.. I'm trying it now

Hmm I've not found a piece of software that identifies it. SetFSB is the program I use to adjust it though.

I GOT IT!!!!!!! I have a 3Ghz OC on the Xeon with a Multiplier of x20 (I have no Idea how it got to that...) and a Bus Speed of 150.84

EDIT: I have a clock of 3.4Ghz on a 2.4Ghz Xeon now :D With a Bus Speed of 180 MHz
