Hi there LTT people,
it's a' me! Waterdamaged 7970 guy! Now I finally got to get a replacement for the poor drowned 7970 GHz. Edition and my question is - will my PSU handle it?

First, my specs:
i5 2500k @stock (well cooled)

8GB RAM

1x HDD, 1x SSD

4x 120mm. fans

PSU: Fortron Saga II 500W

Now, there are two options for me:
1.) go for a Sapphire 7950 OC Dual-X Flex 3GB, which eats less than my ex-7970 GHz. (1100MHz.) so I could OC a bit the CPU and the GPU too!
2.) go for a Sapphire 280X Toxic 3gb, which eats a bit more than my ex-7970 GHz. and has higher core clock by 50MHz. The 7970 GHz. had only 6+8pin power connector and my PSU could handle that I guess pretty well, I've even OC'ed the CPU a little bit (from 3,3 to 3,8) and haven't had a single crash, BSOD, anything.

Will my PSU handle the 280X Toxic? After all, it's just a slightly modified 7970 GHz. with 50MHz. more core clock, yet it needs 8+8 additional power (I'll have to use a molex conversion), but on the other hand, on Sapphire site the recommended PSU is 500W, so I should be fine, I guess.

As for the prices, I can get the 7950 Flex for 110€ and the 280X Toxic for 150€, but the thread is still mostly about the PSU, so don't beat me up please!

Thanks in advance!

There won't be much of a performance gain between the 7950 (which is the same as a 280, what I have) and the 280X. You'll get slightly better framerates, but you won't necessarily be able to turn textures up or anything.

My rig: Intel Core i7-8700K OC 4.8 | NZXT Kraken X62 | ASUS Z370-F | 16 GB Trident Z RGB 3000 (2x8) | EVGA 1070 SC | EVGA SuperNova NEX650G1 | NZXT H700 | Samsung 250GB 850-EVO | 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs

Go find a 280x (great gpu bought mine used and its great) and upgrade your PSU, 500w is enough for it with a light OC but Id get one thats bronze and from a more well known manufacturer

Hmmm... so I should go this path buy 7950, buy new PSU, buy better GPU later instead of this buy 280X Toxic, for a while live on the actual PSU, buy better PSU later ?

But...
