Hi

I've now built my first pc and i've decided to use two 256gb mx100 ssd drives, no HDD, as 512gb is enough for me, at this point atleast.

So I would like to ask the best community, which "set up" would be the best when using two 256gb ssd drives.

I want the full capacity of my drives - 512gb is enough, but i can't do less.

I store all my documents in the sky.

So far, i store all my pictures (the ones i got on my phone) in the sky, and my videos (only what i've recorded with my gopro) are always stored on my external hdd.

Which raid should i use?

Is it better to just use them as two separate drives?

I hope you guys got some answers for a noob.

Use them as separate drives. RAID 0 would combine them into a 512GB array, but it also doubles the chances of losing any data stored on the drives. Other RAID types would reduce you to the capacity of a single drive.

I'd say go with RAID 0 on the SSDs. That way you get the full 512gb (without formatting) of storage, coupled with the scaled speed benefit of the RAID. The rate of failure on today's SSDs is fairly low. Just ensure that you regularly backup your valuable information.

So at this point there  are two against and one for RAID 0...Would i be able to just combine the two drives, so the system sees them as one or woulld that just be silly?

You could, but it pretty much follows the same principle as RAID 0, so yeah, would be silly.

You'll always get two sides going against each other on the RAID 0 with SSDs.

Other factors to think about are TRIM support on the RAID controller (without it, SSD performance will drop a bit over time), the increased boot time (RAID controller has to initialize), and if the boost in speed is worth it.

I'm more on the paranoid side with my data, so that's kind of why I go for the safer route.

I've made a little research and found that the performance increase with raid 0 isn't to notice unless you transfer bigger files (correct me if i'm wrong) and that the device you're transfering from/to has to be able to work at the same speed.

So I decided to set up as two separate drives - though at first my pc could "see" the drive in disk management, but i couldn't use it - fixed that, but what should i call the drive? (not that it matters)

I have Local Disk C: (500 GB 850 Evo), Mass SSD Storage M: (960 GB M500), Mass HDD Storage N: (3 TB HGST Deskstar NAS). Names don't matter.

That is correct about raid, it also can slow down some burst random small loads and/or boot times due to the increased overhead.

I just don't really see the point much anymore, although I certainly wouldn't discourage someone from using it.
