Having hard time choosing.

Hunty

Hello there!

I want to buy a new laptop, and i want to use it for gaming, work, and movies.

Option 1: GTX 950m

Option 2: 940m

I know, that the 950m is much better, but both laptops are equipped with a i3 5010u.

I can't afford a better cpu, unless i change the gpu for something much worse.

Is the i3 a bottleneck for the 950m?

Thank you in advance!

I don't think it should bottleneck. It's not like it's a 970m / 980m or anything like that. I'm also sure that they wouldn't pair the CPU & GPU if it would bottleneck.

laptops almost always come with better CPUs - the i3 won't be a bottleneck in most games even with a 960m

Good to hear that! Thanks! I think i will regret it, if i choose the 940, so i save up a bit, and buy the 950 one!

I just looked it up - definitely grab the 950m - The CPU can easily handle it.

Laptops usually have a CPU thats better than its GPU. In other words, bottlenecking shouldnt be an issue, not even with a 960M (i think).

8% more power at best - no difference at worst. Buy the laptop you've chosen :)

Wat model is it btw? Just make sure it can keep itself cool though with the "U" chip and the 950m it should be chilly :D

I choose the Asus K501 lx. They give 3 years warranty with it, and if there is something wrong with the laptop within 1 year, they give a full refund, + fix the laptop:) FullHD screen, Aluminium body, (with a little plastic) I can extend it with m.2 ssd later.

Seems solid - buy it if you ask me :)

The 6000 series seems to come with ddr4, probably can't afford it anyway:D

DDR4 is barely an improvement in games - unless you're doing heavy work like editing or rendering - it's not worth it :P

Agreed, but wondering if it helps with Cad/Cam programs, i'm a civil engineer.

You won't notice the difference - the bottleneck in those applications will be the CPU, not the RAM

It seems that the 950m is the GDDR3 version, not the GDDR5. Still worth it? i mean it's still 65 dollars more, still going to be better, but not sure how much. I've red that its about 20% slover than the GDDR5 version. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-950M.138026.0.html

Any opinions?
