I will be doing my first desktop build in a few days and I want to do a test boot before I install everything in the case. I have the Kraken X61 AIO cooler and my i5-6600K doesn't come with a stock cooler. Do I need to mount the X61 for the test boot? Once it is installed I am guessing that it is best to not take it off as I would have to reapply thermal paste?

I will be doing my first desktop build in a few days and I want to do a test boot before I install everything in the case. Test it outside the case before installing it in the case, make sure you dont put the side panel on too (for good luck)

I did a test boot on my brand new Skylake build with the mobo installed since installing an aftermarket aircooler is kind of a pain outside the case. Worked out well enough.

EDIT: Where you do your test boot only affects how much of a pain it'll be pulling stuff out if you've got parts that are dead on arrival.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough...I am asking if I need to mount the X61 for the test boot? I am guessing that once it is on there I can't remove it without reapplying thermal paste again...

You will have to mount it.

generally for things like this a test boot, you can remove it and replace it without a problem (w/o changing the thermal paste). But if its one thats been used for a month or two, You'd want to re-apply the thermal paste
