DVI-D to VGA

Go to solution Solved by Tommy59375,

would dvi-d single link to vga work? and is a dvi-d single link cable compatible with a dvi-d dual link port?

There is NOTHING you can do for ANY kind of DVI-D -> VGA apart from active converters.

Single link simply has half the bandwidth of dual link and everything will run at "lowest common denominator" so if anything is single link you will be limited to single link.

i have a DVI-D port on my motherboard and a VGA monitor. i have heard that using an adapter, such as: http://www.amazon.com/Male-DVI-D-Female-VGA-Adapter/dp/B007EA48MA/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1441841058&sr=1-6&keywords=dvi+to+vga, will not work if you have a DVI monitor and a VGA motherboard. but will it work the other way around?

DVI-D is a digital signal, VGA is analogue. You would need an active adapter to use it. That adapter won't work, no matter how you connect them.

EDIT: You'd need something like this http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-DVI2VGAE-1920x1200-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00C93JQXS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1441841753&sr=1-1&keywords=dvi+to+vga+active to go from DVI-D to VGA. Or you'd need to use a DVI-I port with an adapter to VGA.

Yes.

However, if you have a DVI-I port, you can buy a cheap adapter to go to VGA. If you have a port with the four extra pins this this, you can buy a DVI-I adapter for a few $

Any active adapter would do the trick but expect to lose some quality.

Also stop using VGA.

i will once i get my 980. right now im stuck with hdmi, vga, and dvi-d

So.. get a new monitor?  I find it hard to believe that any modern monitor has only a VGA input.

I don't know.. just do anything to get away from it.

Maybe other people don't care or can't tell a difference but for me going from DVI to VGA is like night and day (urr, I mean day and night.. or something).  Anyway, it's a piece of junk at the higher resolutions and on flat panel displays.  It worked great back in the days of 800x600 and CRTs but we really need to move on now.

Also you can adapt single-link DVI-D to/from HDMI.  This is enough data rate for up to 1920x1200 @ 60 Hz.  You don't need an active converter, just a cable that essentially rearranges some pins.
