Supplemental Power Supply

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

Yes. It would be 1050 watts in total. And it's also re-useable in case someone else ever needs it(if you decide to get a 1,000 watt power supply in the future or whatever). And according to the reviews on Amazon, it does deliver.

So my power supply that i was using to power my system died out sadly, and I had to revert to a backup which is 600watts. I have a HD 7950 and a 9800GTX+ in my machine and 600watts its not really enough to power them both. It buzzes a lot so I had to take out the 9800 and un-OC the 7950. I was looking around for a new power supply, maybe around 1000watts, and I found this 450watt supplemental power supply(  http://amzn.to/17faIEv ). Efficiency doesnt really matter to me since I don't pay the electric bill and to me a 600watt+450watt=1050watts. So I could power the 9800 off the main power supply and the 7950 off the supplement. I have never run dual power supplies before let alone a configuration like this and was wondering if it was worth the money really. I only have around $80 to spend, not much more. Would this work and be a good buy, or should I wait a couple months and save my money...I really want to start using my computer without it buzzing.

You should be fine with a 600W unit, IF it's been build well. What PSU is it?

1000W for that system is massive overkill. It might be buzzing but I doubt that you would pull more than 600W at full load, the PSU you have would of shut down if you did.

Wait a while and get a good 650-750W PSU to have a bit (a fair bit) of overhead.

Its a thermaltake, and I am trying to run two cards off of it, and maybe plan to install a third. And the computer does shut down whenever I set a game to high with just the 7950oc, it buzzes loudly and then shuts down. On my previous power supply which was 750watts, it was fine running both the 7950 and 9800 with high settings. I also run 3 monitors.

If you might get a 3rd card then 1000W isn't that ludacious.

Someone correct me if there is an easier way to do this. But from what I understand if you use 2 PSU you will have trouble starting the computer, you need everything to be given power at once so you'd need to jump the 24pin on the PSU that it isn't connected to the motherboard (so the PSU thinks it IS plugged into a motheboard) and somehow get it to turn on when boot the computer so the 2nd PSU gives the GPUs power. You won't get past post otherwise.

IMO more hassle than it's worth. Save up and get PSU that can supple all your needs.

Yes. Having the second power supply will require you to jump it. Unless you can wire it to have them both start up when you push the power button.

get a quality 550-650w psu and throw the 9800GTX+ out ...

Why would I throw it out, it's a great card and I use it to connect my s-video tv up to my computer, I also use it for physx, cause...why not : P

I think the supplement power supply I was looking at connects to the main with a molex connector. But I dont know how well that works. I could probably get a 1000watt power supply for a little more, does anyone have a suggestion for a good power supply, If I wait a little longer maybe I could spend around $130 for a power supply.

@SimplySteam. Yes it uses molex to connect to the main PSU. Right here in this diagram: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61-DyTAR8LL._SL1000_.jpg

It would work. If you waited, it would require less hardware overall in different parts of your computer. Know what I'm saying?

Yeah, It would be more stuff in my small case. But if it works and is less money than buying a new power supply I think I would like that option. Because 600wat main supply+450watt supple supply= 1050watts in total, right?

Yes. It would be 1050 watts in total. And it's also re-useable in case someone else ever needs it(if you decide to get a 1,000 watt power supply in the future or whatever). And according to the reviews on Amazon, it does deliver.
