I recently did a big upgrade to my setup (mobo, processor, and ram). It all seemed to work just fine for a few days before it started to just shut off all of a sudden...no warning...just off. I had an initial issue getting it to boot when I first built it and I had to switch something from IDE to AHCI in the bios. And no I didn't just play with everything I seen in there. A few days have passed and it is still doing that, but it now also tanks fps and makes a horrible buzzing in my headset while also causing major distortion. If I alt F4 out of my games it will generally stop but continue within a few minutes if I don't restart. If I restart my comp on average it will last about 3-6 hours before it does it again. If I am playing a game, it tends to either just shut off or go full retard, if I am idle on the desktop then most of the time it will just shut off. Known issue...I run HOT... but not so hot that I throttle. I ran into some issues and have to run the stock cooler for a little.

Here is a pic of my HWmonitor just after it had an issue

I think it's either the Mobo or the PSU....

If you can try switching to another PSU to check if the errors arestill occurring and if so then try out your old mobo since you Maximus VII Hero might be defect....

Originaly I'd have said CPU overheating but since you said something about changing back to stock cooler I dont't think your old cooler was causing troubles in terms of cooling. Unless you put the thermal paste on wrongly....

So more back story. I had my rig running with an older amd board and an A8 before my upgrade. I have only just installed the mobo, processor and ram. And unfortunately due to current and sudden budget issues I never got a better cooler in the first place, so it has been stock from day one. I also have no compatible PSU, mobo, or processors to assist with troubleshooting.

Oh, well then it's CPU overheating... Get yourself a better cooler. Theres good (enough) ones for 20$ on amazon... Try the one from Arctic....

You probably got yourself a unfortunate CPU which gets hotter easier. So every time you game it overheats....

Whereas I can not disagree with that, I don't think that is the reason (or at least only reason) I am having this issue. the 4790k starts to throttle at 99c and shutdown at 110c (from with  I have read)

If you are running the stock cooler, and can't afford an aftermarket one right now, just turn off your overclock and you should be fine.

Another question: How did you even check your overclock for stability when it clearly overheats?

Im full stock, I haven't OC at all. the pic I shared of it running at 35000mhz was caused by my problem. it normally runs at 4.4 like it is supposed to

I'm sorry, I forgot that the 4790K ran 4.4 GHz stock.

Still, 90C at 75% load seems like overheating to me. Are you sure the stock cooler is mounted properly?

95%, I live in the desert, it was about 101f today...so that doesn't help

That is definately not helping, but still you shouldn't overheat because of that. The picture you linked says max temp almost 90C while the max load is nowhere near full load, but you seem convinced that it's not overheating.

I can't help you any further.

I fully agree it is very very hot, and way above what I would consider optimal. But to my limited knowledge (quite limited) it does not "seem" to me like that would be causing the issue fully. If I am wrong (you better believe that I hope I am in this case) then that's awesome. I suppose my problem is that I can't understand while it has issues at idle (about 50c,and yes I know, thats way too hot). If you could educate me I would thankful.

I agree, at 50C idle in theory you shouldn't have any problems, even if it overheats on full load.

Since you had no problems with your PSU before the upgrade, it's probably not that.

Are you getting bluescreens?

Anyways I would test the following:

-Test your RAM with MemTest86+

- Do you have problems when running 1 stick of RAM? (try all sticks)

- Test your CPU for stability (and check your temps while you're on it, so you can see if it overheats on full load or not. If it does and the cooler is installed properly - make sure - then perhaps you have a bad chip.

If your RAM and CPU are not the problem, then the only thing left is the motherboard.

Also, after reading through the whole topic again: A clean install after such a big upgrade & change of hardware is always a good idea. Drivers might be fighting a war behind the scenes without you knowing it.

no bluescreens
I can tell you right now it will overheat and throttle, been there done that. The intel stock cooler is just not up to the task. Im going to try to get my cooler this weekend (h100i GTX)

ill run through the mem tests, see if anything comes up

i have been thinking of doing a clean install for 10...looks like now might be a good time

Nah... I got a i7-4790K... Shuts down at about 90°C (yes I tried, and yes I am crazy... xD) Or mabye it's the mainboard shutting down to protect the CPU... Could be possible since he has got the same mainboard as I do... Only difference is me having a H110.. :)

playing Civ5 it got to 101 before it throttled, I wont touch it again till I get a cooler...way WAY too hot. I bought an h100iGTX last night, should have it tomorrow and see what happens then.

They will shutdown at 105C~

They will throttle at about 98~

I have been short of time so I haven't done those tests yet, but i did get an H100iGTX installed...I still have issues it seems. It seems not as bad as it was, but it wasn't a very consistent issue. It seems that my processor is underclocking itself to all hell (or atleast this time)

here is a pic

Did the mem test, nothing came up

Normally yes, buuut afaik there is Mainboards which shut down sooner to protect the CPU....

Update: I have reinstalled windows, updated EVERYTHING (I think), gotten an actual heatsink (h100iGTX), updated to the latest BIOS, and ran all of the tests I can think of. I appear no closer to finding out what my problem is but it is seeming more and more like a somewhat dead part (which I originally thought)
