Need new Router

AndyLao1031

I would like to upgrade the networking in my home

Internet connection

300MB up and down fiber in Hong Kong

Setup Now

Router Tp-link 1043nd v2

Currently i have a PC windows 10 running a Pentium connected through LAN

WiFi devices: One plus one 64Gb

                     Moto G first gen

                     iPad 3

Size home : High raise apartment 700 feet

                   A lot of 2.4gHz networks

                   Only 1 5Ghz

I am planning to upgrade to 5Ghz since both my iPad 3 and One plus one support it

I need a router than can go through 3-4 concrete walls to the farthest client

Budget: under 700 hkd roughly 110 CAD

What i have in mind: https://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC55UHP/

Would it be a good idea to buy a 1gb nic for my pc

Any help would be apprenticed, thanks in advanced !!! :)  :)

For that speed I really can't recommend anything less than a AC-66U/R or preferably a R7000.

3 -4 concrete walls might be a bit much for any router

I would consider using powerline adapters with wireless at the far end of the house

If you need remote help fixing something on your computer

I can help over Teamviewer if you wish

just msg me on my profile

Actually it's only around 3 walls, Most of the time my parents and i will be using WiFi in the living room. My parents rarely use WiFi in their master bed room the farthest one away

I could also setup my current router in their bedroom as secondary wifi

wouldn't the ASUS 55UHP be enough, mostly will be doing HD video streaming only

You'll want a higher end router because they have better SoCs meaning you can route more. So if your downloading a file and/or steaming HD video your routing 300Mbps of traffic + other local traffic you can handle it better. Also you get faster packet processing so your less likely to drop packets under heavy load, something very important if you game.

As for the range most consumer routers 5GHz antennas are internal and the EIRP is low meaning the 5GHz is likely to be crappy after 1 concrete wall.

other than asus any there any other good options

E.g. D-Link DIR-859

there are

I wouldn't get a router tho that wasn't compatible with 3rd party firmware

since retail firmware is usually crap

So would the AC66U form Asus be enough to penetrate through 2-3 walls and still be able to stream HD video , no gaming just streaming

I would be able to sue the router for a long time right 4 years maybe?

im gonna say yea..but I really can't be sure how strong the signal will be at the far end

if it is weak..you can always use a powerline adapter with wireless ..like I mentioned

far end doesn't matter i can use a secondary router in my parents room, but if i do chose to go with AC55UHP will i be losing a lot of performance

5GHz, goes much shorter distances than 2.4GHz do to 5GHz wavelength being about half of 2.4GHz . That being said your still likely to get better rates because there's almost no noise, you might not be able to get the best rate through 3 walls on 5GHz though but you should get at least 10 Mbps throughput worst case. Most online streaming services don't use more than 10-12 Mbps for their best quality 1080p video so you should be fine.

The biggest difference you'll see is the lack of interference of packets on 5GHz so you wont get annoying buffering/potato quality on Wi-Fi.

Is interference of packets that useful

Yes, you get better pings so you load websites faster, and don't get continual buffering on streaming.

If it says dual band, then it has 5GHz , I'd get one that's wireless AC. The TP-Link Archer C7 is a good budget router if the other two aren't options.

https://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC55UHP/ this one has dual band and 5 Ghz, is it good

It uses a pretty decent Atheros chipset and range is likely decent if your not looking to upgrade your internet to something faster it's probably fine.
