Overclocking a 5960x

Go to solution Solved by soaringchicken,

what is a good stress tester for free?

passmark, prime95, XTU is a good one.

So I've recently built a system with a 5960x... this is literally my first system guess not the best place to start lol. This system will be used for both gaming and rendering so I'd really like a stable system. This being my first system i literally have no idea how to even start over clocking i under stand the basics of it like go into advance in the bios and changed some numbers. If someone could give me a guide of step by step thing to overclock and what numbers to start with that be helpful. Also as this being my first overclock i dont want it to be great its just the 3.0 base and 3.5 is a little slow. Oh and also the motherboard is asus rampage V

First off what's your cooler?

Generally when I OC, I start with seeing if it can do it's turbo all the time, so do that (I validate it with 2/3hrs of prime95), every time it fails push the voltage up in increments of 0.1/0.2 depending on your confidence. If temps are okay in the end result you're are good to keep overclocking in the same sort of sense (increase the clock). After you find your highest clock, validate it with with 12hrs of Prime95. I usually push it back 0.1/0.2Ghz behind it's max overclock for ultimate stability.

Corsair h110

Prime95 is actually overvolts the CPU on Haswell-E, on an 8-core OC'd that would really stress it thermally. I'm recommend the Aida64 trial.

That's probably the best cooler you could've gotten, so just follow what me and Alsius said and you should be fine :)
