Thanks to all those who helped me in my previous networking conundrums, however I have one (hopefully final) question regarding Gigabit Ethernet Switches; does the internal ethernet core require specialist switches or are they more or less universal?

I have a reel of solid core shielded ethernet and was dismayed at the lack of info regarding the compatibility of solid/stranded core wires in switch info...

Am I really such a giant noob?

“Hey, Chief! I might be wrong, but I think we’re flying into a mountain. This makes me feel … scared of the mountain! One thing we could do is pull up and fly over the mountain. How does that sound to …” *Boom*

They're pretty much universal. There's not a huge difference between solid or stranded core for most applications, and switches will work with both types.

EDIT: Unless you're making cables or cabling into walljacks, the only major difference you need to consider is that stranded cables are more flexible than solid core. Personally, I prefer solid core as it's just easier to work with for making cables and running to walljacks. Performance and compatibility wise, there is no difference.
